Abu Dhabi, 01 March 2008

The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) invited the Arab Ministerial Council for ICT to organize the 11th Meeting of the Arab Spectrum Management Group (ASMG) assigned to prepare for the World Radio-communication Conference 2011 (WRC-11) in Abu Dhabi, from 2 – 6 March 2008. The Ministerial Council welcomed the invitation in its meeting that took place at the Arab League Headquarters in Cairo on 10 January 2008, and urged the Arab countries to heavily participate in this important Meeting.

The TRA is organizing this Meeting in cooperation with the Secretariat General of the Arab League, where a meeting between the Group Chair, his deputies and the Arab League Secretariat General is taking place today. However, the ASMG is one of the effective teams that were established by a decree from the Arab Ministerial Council for ICT of the Arab League to prepare for the WRC, which is held every four years by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The ASMEG presents the documents to the WRC on behalf of the Arab countries, and presents the outcome of its actions to the Ministerial Council periodically; where it has always won the admiration of the Ministerial Council for its distinguished achievements.

ASMG consists of spectrum related entities from all the Arab countries such as the telecom regulatory authorities, the civil aviation, the Ministries of Defense, the Ministries of Interior, radio broadcasting corporations, televisions, the media, and satellites institutions. ASMG coordinates with all these parties among the Arab states for an effective preparation to preserve the Arab interests in international events, in addition to acting as a coordinator among the regional, international and Islamic organizations.

ASMG agenda is to prepare for the WRC-11, to review their achievements in the WRC-07, and to discuss all issues related to spectrum management coordination.

However, the ASMG success in coordinating the Arab interests and  documents in international events, made the Arab group a solid front approached by many geographic groups for coordination at all radio sector events organized by the ITU; such as recently in the WRC-07, where all ASMG documents and suggestions were accredited by the ITU.
