Abu Dhabi, 10 June 2007

With respect to the strategy of the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) to support fair competition in the UAE Telecom Sector and to protect the consumer, and out of the TRA belief in the importance of developing the Sector through encouraging the telecom operators to focus on services competition that enhances continuous development, and providing public offers that serve the consumers and the national economy; the TRA has issued a decision related to the interconnection between the fixed lines networks of “etisalat” and “du”, concerning dialing International calls.

Therefore, the TRA hereby informs the customers of the fixed line networks of both operators (etisalat/du) that they can use the other operator’s fixed line network to dial International calls, automatically, without prior permission and without changing their subscription.

The subscriber in any fixed line network may use the other operator’s fixed line network for his/her International calls through dialing a certain number, to be provided by his/her operator, prior to dialing the International code.

In this regard, H.E. Mohamed Al Ghanim, Board Member & Director General of the TRA, commented, “The TRA has informed both telecom operators of this decision on Sunday, 10 June 2007, where we are informing the public in accordance with the TRA policy of transparency that has been adopted since the beginning.” Mr. Al Ghanim added, “The main goal behind this decision is to emphasize on serving the consumer who will be the direct beneficiary of the decision, to encourage fair competition and to safeguard the Telecom Sector from any kind of monopoly. Hence, the UAE would be one of the first countries to activate such a service, although the TRA has not yet reached its 3rd year of age.”
