H.E. Houlin Zhao, the current Secretary General of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has been re-elected to the post, during the Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-18) being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). Zhao was announced as the Secretary General of the ITU for the upcoming four-year term, by H.E. Eng. Majed Al Mesmar, the Deputy Director General of the Telecommunications sector at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and the Chairman of PP-18.
The announcement was made at PP-18, which is being held in the UAE for the first time, organized by Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and runs until 16th November. Results were declared during the general elections session wherein the delegations casted their votes.
After the announcement, H.E. Zhao thanked the Government of China and everyone who voted for him. He pledged to continue to work on achieving the ITU’s vision, which aims at drafting policies and objectively distributing world resources like radio frequency spectrum and tropical satellite.
Addressing the audience after the appointment, H.E. Zhao said that all ITU’s efforts are aimed at creation of smooth communications system that is characterized by power, authenticity and continuous development.
The Chinese delegation head, congratulated H.E. Zaho for being re-elected as Secretary general of the ITU for the second time. He also pledged that the Chinese delegation will keep supporting the ITU in its events and endeavors.
Later, H.E. Eng. Al Mesmar announced the appointment of Malcom Johnson from Britain to the post of Deputy Secretary General of the ITU. Johnson was elected over another candidate for the same post, Brahima Sano from Burkina Faso.
On his select to the post, Johnson thanked his country and vowed to work seriously with the Secretary General for achieving the objectives of the Union and contribute effectively towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across all countries of the world.
The UAE delegation, represented by H.H. Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, the Director general of TRA congratulated H.H. Zhao and Johnson for winning the elections and the confidence of the member countries.
“Challenges are tremendous and the volume of the work required is huge, but I am confident that H.E. Zhao and Mr. Johnson will successfully lead the march of the Union during their term in the office. I reaffirmed the UAE’s on-going support to the efforts of the ITU and its keenness to contribute in the decisions will continue to bring good results. This way we can together pace up the sustainable development and prosperity. ’He also highlighted that Sano’s contributions for ITU are notable.
Plenipotentiary Conference, the key event of ITU, held every four years, will this year convene representatives of Member States to set out a plan for 2020-2023 in terms of the latest developments in ICT.
ITU is the United Nations’ specialized agency for ICT, which allocates global radio spectrum, develops the technical standards and strives to improve access to technology for the under-served communities worldwide.
